The first villa to be completed in the new exclusive 300-acre luxury villa community of Oil Nut Bay, Beach Villa 3 required a simple solution for distributed audio and video. A key stipulation of the owners was that the system should be very simple to control, which has always been a Think Simple specialty.
The design and installation teams had the added challenges created by any remote island project. This exclusive home required meticulous logistical planning, and consideration for the harsh environmental conditions experienced at a beach-side location. Think Simple systems always have to be rugged and marinised due to the harsh Caribbean environment, ensuring that the cabling, connections and hardware are fully protected from the high level of salt content in the air.
This installation was no exception. Indeed, the remoteness of this location made the need for reliability even more pronounced.
Power was another key issue to manage. At Oil Nut Bay power is switched between the main grid and backup generators when the main grid fluctuates or shuts down temporarily. The resulting sags, spikes and surges can have a very damaging effect on all of the electrical components in the system. Think Simple deployed APC Smart Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to filter and protect the hardware.
The chosen components to satisfy the design brief were to use Crestron at the heart of the control system with Remote Technologies (RTi) wand style handheld devices for local control of all TV’s.
An Extricom centralized WiFi system was also installed in order to maintain a seamless connection to the home network and Internet.
The result is that every bedroom looks clean and elegant with TV’s mounted close to the walls and all boxes and wires hidden in the centralized head end rack. To control the audio, Crestron’s TPMC-4SM was used in key locations. The audio sources are simply two iPods, which can be shared in any of the audio zones. An unusual feature is the positioning of two 55” LED TVs in the living room which can be switched for the owner to watch separate sports events at the same time, switching audio as desired. The video source includes an HD satellite service and a Blu-ray DVD that can be shared to any of the TV’s on the property.
